Treating inflammation with polyphenols. Part 1

Our skin and body is constantly on the receiving end of inflammatory aggressors and oxidative stress which at a  chronic level can cause long term detriment.  Intrinsic skin ageing (chronologically aged skin) is primarily due to a result of an acclumation of oxidative damage.  Younger skin is very efficient at guarding against oxidative damage, yet as we age this skin mechanism declines, which in turn triggers inflammation…..breaking down collagen and a notable decrease in the number of fibroblasts.  Extrinsic skin ageing arises from a continual assault of UV radiation, pollution, smoking and air conditioning; all of which further exacerbates skin cell damage.

Prevention is key!  Wearing a broad spectrum SPF daily will minimise DNA damage and the use of antioxidant topical skincare will have a beneficial role in fighting against free radical damage.  Antioxidants in the form of polyphenols are an ingredient catagory tha...

Can We Talk About @limeandlilac Lisa the founder & genius behind the brand, created something wonderful for me, yes me! her amazing Light Face Oil, but, without essential oils. I was over-whelmed with her suggestion to do this after I’d had a diagnosis of Rosacea, and the warning of no fragrance or essential oils (more to some on that at a later date), anyway, the creation was done & I’ve discovered something, aside from having used the original, which is blooming amazing and left my skin glowing in the healthiest of ways. I realised that because there is no scent, you focus on the texture completely, this is silky, it’s the most luxurious oil & I’ve told Lisa previously, her oils have a consistency like no other, this really brings it home with this 100% Natural Face Oil. It pools like liquid gold, the oil holds its form as you blend it, my skin almost fizzes as I massage into my face. The glow, the softness is sublime, it helps me focus away from the lumps and bumps and at the positi...

As the season changes so will my skincare routine... I love Lisa's lightweight facial oil as it provides just the right amount of nourishment when my skin isn't as dry as it gets during winter. I fell in love with the delicate aroma from the very first time I tried her oil.

With ingredients like safflower seed, watermelon seed and prickly pear you know that your skin will be left soft, supple and irresistibly smooth.

Also featured here is the Vesper oil which I have been using sparingly on evenings when the routine is one of luxury. I love that the delicate fragrance of the Vesper oil doesn't overpower other scents but rather complements them. If you are a fan of neroli you will love both of these oils. Lisa has also recently launched a cleansing oil. Definitely check out @limeandlilac for more about the brand. Her products are an experience for the senses... beautifully packaged and delicately fragranced for smooth and healthy skin.

Guest review from Bryanna at The ecoLogical - www.theecological.co.uk

You may have seen my recent Instagram post showing my love for Lime & Lilac's 100% Natural Light Face Oil and promising a full review of both that bottled beauty and the Capri Body Oil -- and while life got away from me for a hot minute, I am back and finally bringing my full review to The ecoLogical!
Who They Are: Lime & Lilac is an all natural and handmade skincare brand that was created by the lovely Lisa earlier this year.  She took the plunge after completing her skincare courses, and launched her first product, a light facial oil, which was received with love by everyone who tried it!

What They Offer: Lime & Lilac are incredibly unique in that they offer a "capsule" style skincare range.  This means that there are only two products available to purchase from this eco-biz -- the 100% Natural Light Face Oil and the Capri 100% Natural Body Oil.  Lisa actually commented on why she follows this mo...

I’m very happy to announce that due to a higher demand of Lime & Lilac Light face oil, I’m now able to pass any discounts I receive on bulk orders (raw materials), onto my customers.  I grant you its not a huge saving but a saving non the less, especially on the 30ml bottles.  When a business places a larger order it earns extra discounts and free P&P, this has a huge positive impact on the financial aspect of a business.

Before starting out, my husband and I unequivocally agreed that we had no desire to apply for a business loan, so consequently put money aside to help towards courses, materials, equipment and certification etc.  We’ve gradually transitioned from a business where only small quantities could ever be ordered (more costly in the end) due to not knowing what the future held…….to fortunately being able to order accordingly.

Thankfully my hubby & partner in crime is an astute business man and number cruncher (his day job) who often reigns my impulsive w...

From the very beginning when Lime & Lilac was a distant dream I was determined to create a few quality pieces that would provide the foundation to healthy, strong skin.  The word capsule has been touted around for years and I’ve always loved the idea, especially when it comes to a capsule wardrobe -  although I’ve yet to maintain a minimal lifestyle……..its a work in progress for me!!

The idea of formulating and launching skincare quicker than a production line was never my aim; I can’t and wouldn’t want to compete with ‘The Big Boys’ in the cosmetic industry.  My line only consists of two products but these have taken many, many, many (you get the idea) months and sleepless nights of trial and error to produce; I’m a hopeless perfectionist - of which I’m very comfortable with but it can make living with me a tad challenging!  I have on several occasions woke up in the middle of the night with a ‘light bulb’ moment; enthusiastically getting straight to work!

I have my moments of...

I’m so excited at last to be able to share with you  my Lovely friend Lisa @limeandlilac First Facial Oil ✨

✨I felt very honoured that Lisa asked me to test it which I have happily done & I can honestly say it’s a beautiful light oil, with a delicate lemon hue as seen in my 1st picture but despite it’s elegance it’s also deeply nourishing disappearing rapidly leaving the skin with a healthy glow, please see my 2nd picture. It’s fragranced subtly with the sweet yet slightly bitter orange honeyed notes of Neroli sitting in a spicy warm background of Frankincense the scent lingers just long enough to bring a smile to the lips then dissipates. I Love the fragrance of a product as every one is unique, for me it’s the signature of the creator ✨

✨When I see a picture of Lisa she always looks elegant & beautiful with a certain delicateness to her but don’t be fooled she’s a strong fiery character, well her First Oil matches her perfectly beautiful elegant & delicate but it packs a nourishing pun...

I've been desperately wanting to write this blog for quite some time but I never really knew how to broach the subject.  I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety since my late teens……..there I said it!! The world in general is a much kinder and understanding place than 25 years ago.  The only people that knew then were my parents and best friend; I was ashamed to confide in anyone else.....crazy hey!  I have no control over these inconveniences; I simply roll with it.  Perhaps ‘simply’ isn’t the best description but I’ve learnt over the years that acceptance is key.

I was compelled to explain the above as social media on the whole seems to portray the perfect life; beautiful people (often filtered), locations, home life etc.

I don’t believe in perfection and have yet to meet anyone that doesn’t struggle from time to time; its what makes us appreciate the good times and further pushes us to pursue our dreams.

Stepping out of my comfort zone can be exhausting not only...

I was inspired to write a few words after reading a fab post yesterday on ‘Ingredients Matter’. Before my journey into the world of natural skincare I wasn’t aware of how many oils on the market were adulterated.  It soon became apparent that it was vital to find an excellent supplier with years experience under their belt and who were willing to answer all my questions.  Oh boy, I had plenty of questions 😆. I remember being perplexed at the sediment at the bottom of my Argan oil bottle; had it gone off?  The answer was no.

It’s simply the oils insoluble fraction.....tocopherols etc.  I posted an article a few months back on an experiment which  identifies a pure grade Argan oil (see below). Scent is another indicator of a good cold pressed oil; although this can vary with each crop.  There is often a distinctive aroma with each seed oil; raging from very mild (almost odourless), neutral to downright pungent!

There were several oils I had planned to use i...

Lime and Lilac Neroli & Frankincense Facial Oil

Once Upon A Time in the land of Insta and Gram, there was a very clever and beautiful lady who created a magical oil, she spent a long time studying the best potions and lotions to make this so special and put up with a lot of know-it-alls, who, it turned out, didn't know that much! Then one bright and sunny day, a parcel arrived at the house of the writer of this story, in it was a bottle, a bottle holding the magical oil. The writer ran, which doesn't happen often, unless chocolate is half price at the supermarket, took all her colours from her face so she could apply Lime & Lilac, Neroli and Frankincense Facial Oil.

My love of oils is well known and it is rare that I ever feel disappointment in any, some may not be as champion as others, but, generally, oils are my 'thing'. Neroli especially is a huge favourite and over the years I have found that blends of neroli and frankincense work a damn treat for my skin, so, you can imagine...
